Informations

Porsche Carrera GT

The development of the Porsche Carrera GT can be traced back to its predecessors, the 911 GT1 and the LMP1-98 race cars. Partly due to a change in FIA and ACO regulations in 1998, production of these cars was halted. Around this time (1999), however, Porsche planned to build a new Le Mans prototype. Initially, the car was to be equipped with a flat-six turbo engine, but it was later redesigned to accommodate a V10 engine. This modification made the car suitable for racing starting in 2000.

The V10 engine was originally a secretly developed Porsche engine for the Footwork Formula 1 team in 1992. The engine was revived and its displacement was increased to 5.5 liters. However, the project was canceled in mid-1999 after only two days of testing. Reportedly, this was due to Porsche, under the influence of Audi and Volkswagen, shifting focus to the development of the new Cayenne SUV, requiring all available engineers. There is also speculation that VW-Audi executive Ferdinand Piëch did not want Porsche competing with Audi's R8 Le Mans prototype introduced in 2000.

Porsche kept the project alive by using the 5.5-liter V10 (now bored out to 5.7 liters) in a prototype unveiled at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, designed by Dutch designer Harm Lagaay. Strong public interest and the commercial success of the Cayenne convinced Porsche to move forward with production. Development began on a street-legal version, to be built in Porsche's new Leipzig facility. Production began in 2004, and the first Carrera GTs were sold in the United States for $440,000. In the Netherlands, the starting price including taxes was €646,605.

Originally, 1,500 units were planned, but in August 2005 Porsche announced that production would end in 2006, reportedly due to stricter US vehicle stability control regulations. By May 6, 2006, 1,270 Carrera GTs had been sold, 604 of which were in the United States.

The Porsche Carrera GT was available in five colors: Guards Red, Faience Yellow, Basalt Black metallic, GT Silver metallic, and Seal Grey metallic.

The Carrera GT features deep side air intakes and a large front grille, both essential for cooling the V10 engine. Technically, the Carrera GT is a true masterpiece, with many components made of aluminum and carbon fiber. It is equipped with a ceramic clutch and comes standard with center-lock wheels, a rare feature in 2004. The Carrera GT also has a large automatic rear spoiler that deploys at 110 km/h.

True Porsche enthusiasts will recognize many small design details that later appeared in models such as the 2009 Panamera and 2010 Cayenne. In this sense, the Carrera GT was far ahead of its time in 2004, and perhaps that's why it remains such a timeless design icon.

About our Carrera GT:
The example we are offering was originally delivered in Germany and has just one owner from new! Finished in stunning 'Basalt Black Metallic' with a Terracotta leather interior, it is one of only six European-delivered Carrera GTs in this elegant configuration. The car comes with full documentation, is accident- and damage-free, and received its latest service earlier this year. Included are the original charger, car cover and, exceptionally rare, the complete original luggage set (valued at €15,000). In short: a Carrera GT for the true connoisseur!

Although the photos give a good impression, we dare say that this Carrera GT looks even more beautiful in person.
