Information

Porsche Carrera GT

The development of the Porsche Carrera GT can be traced back to its predecessors, the 911 GT1 and the LMP1-98 race cars. Partly due to changes in the FIA and ACO regulations in 1998, production of these race cars was discontinued. Around this time (1999), however, Porsche was planning to build a new Le Mans prototype. Originally, the car was intended to be equipped with a flat-six turbo engine, but it was redesigned to accommodate a V10 engine instead. This modification made it possible for the car to compete in races starting from 2000.

The V10 engine was originally a secret project developed by Porsche for the Footwork Formula 1 team in 1992. The engine was later revived, with its displacement increased to 5.5 liters. However, the project was canceled in mid-1999 after only two days of testing. Reportedly, Porsche, under the influence of Audi and Volkswagen, decided to focus its engineering resources on developing the new Cayenne SUV. It is also speculated that VW-Audi chairman Ferdinand Piëch did not want Porsche to compete with Audi’s own Le Mans prototype, the Audi R8, which debuted in 2000.

Porsche kept the project alive by using the 5.5-liter V10 (now enlarged to 5.7 liters) in a prototype that was unveiled at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, designed by Dutch designer Harm Lagaay. Strong public interest in the concept and the commercial success of the Cayenne convinced Porsche to move forward with production. Development began on a road-legal version, which would be built at Porsche’s new factory in Leipzig. Production started in 2004, and the first Porsche Carrera GTs were sold in the United States for $440.000. In the Netherlands, the base price including taxes was €646.605.

Originally, Porsche planned to produce 1.500 units, but in August 2005 it was announced that production would cease in 2006, reportedly due to stricter U.S. stability control regulations. By May 6, 2006, a total of 1,270 Carrera GTs had been sold, 604 of which went to the U.S.

The Porsche Carrera GT was available in five colors: Guards Red, Fayence Yellow, Basalt Black, GT Silver, and Seal Grey.

The Carrera GT features deep side air intakes and a large front grille, all designed to provide sufficient cooling for the V10 engine. Technically, it is a true masterpiece—many body components are made of aluminum and carbon fiber. The car comes with a ceramic clutch and wheels equipped with center-lock nuts, which was a remarkable feature in 2004. The Carrera GT also has a large automatic rear spoiler that deploys at speeds above 110 km/h.

True Porsche enthusiasts will recognize many small design details that later appeared in models such as the 2009 Panamera and the 2010 Cayenne. In this way, the Carrera GT was ahead of its time in 2004, both technically and stylistically, and perhaps that’s why it remains so timeless today.
